SAU Presents – Places to Visit during the Mid-Autumn festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival is widely celebrated across cultures that follow the lunar calendar, and in Vietnam, the festival is known as Tết Trung Thu. Every year, the streets across Saigon will light up in colours under the full moon as a festive vibe takes root. You’ll see, hear and feel the thumping energy of public lion dancing performances. You might also have to sidestep past the more than usual number of street vendors selling an assortment of items that would add colour and noise to this vibrant yearly event. If you are in Ho Chi Minh City, one of the more authentic ways to celebrate this festival would be to do it in the city’s ‘Chinatown’ area in District 5.

The other specialty about this festival would be the mooncakes. Massive varieties of traditional and modern versions of this classic can be found anywhere, from dinner tables to company gatherings, and usually for about a month before the actual festivities begin. The density and richness of the ingredients that make up each mooncake, as well as it’s relative hardness, also means that despite its size, most people can’t finish an entire mooncake by themselves. Check out some of these things you can do in HCMC during the mid-autumn festival, and blend in like a local with SAU.
