SAU Explores: District 4
District 4 is nestled right in the city centre, between District 1 and District 7, and is the smallest district in Ho Chi Minh City. The Saigon River surrounds one part of this district, with the city’s port located along its perimeter. Once known and avoided for its heavy triad presence, which has since been cleaned up at the turn of the century, District 4 is now a vibrant and modern area full of residential buildings and busy markets. The streets in this district are usually busy around the clock, mainly because District 4 is the intersection with the southern part of the city.
While the city centre vibe of District 1 is just a short 5-minute walk across the canal, District 4 itself feels more like a local suburban area with its densely packed alleys of mostly small family-run businesses. You can find a generous selection of local street food on a couple of dedicated food streets and markets, all within walking distance of each other. If you’ve been in Saigon long enough, you may even have come across terms like “slumdog com tam“. That would give you a clue as to what you could expect to find in District 4.
